The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture at Guangxi University has a history dating back to the establishment of a preparatory class in 1928. In 1932, it became the Department of Civil Engineering, serving as the university's first engineering department. In 1997, it evolved into the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture. Since its inception in 1928, the School has been led by 14 Heads of Department and 5 former Deans.

The School is home to 174 faculty members, including 143 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 33 doctoral supervisors, 43 faculty members with full senior titles, and 45 faculty members with associate senior titles. Additionally, there are 1 full-time and 1 part-time academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 10 other national-level talents. The faculty includes 7 recipients of the Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award, 1 recipient of the National Xu Zhilun Mechanics Excellent Teacher Award, 1 participant in the Young Elite Science Sponsorship Program by the China Association for Science and Technology Young Talent Promotion Project, and 11 provincial-level talents.

The School currently has 2083 undergraduate students and 1202 doctoral and masters students. It consists of six departments: the Department of Architectural Engineering, the Department of Road and Bridge Engineering, the Department of Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, the Department of Architectural Planning, the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, and the Department of Engineering Mechanics. Furthermore, it houses the National Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering Experiment Teaching.

In 1997, structural engineering was selected as one of the national key construction disciplines under the 211 Project. In 2002, it was among the seven structural engineering disciplines nationwide shortlisted as a national key discipline. The School is home to several prominent research and support platforms, including the National Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering Experiment Teaching, the Key Laboratory of Engineering Disaster Prevention and Structural Safety under the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center of Large-span Arch Bridge Key Technology under the Ministry of Education, the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Engineering Safety, the Engineering Research Center of Large-span Arch Bridge Key Technology, the Guangxi Engineering Technology Research Center of Special Geological Highway Safety, the Engineering Research Center of Water Safety and Intelligent Regulation for Karst Areas of Guangxi, Guangxi Engineering Disaster Prevention and Structural Safety Talent Highland, and the Large-span Arch Bridge Key Technology Talent Highland. These platforms provide significant support for the Schools research and development activities.

In 2017, under the leadership of Academician Zheng Jielian, the Schools Civil Engineering became the only discipline in Guangxi to be selected for the list of World First-class Disciplines. Furthermore, in 2022, the State Key Laboratory of Processing for Non-ferrous Metals and Featured Materials, jointly constructed by Guangxi and the Ministry of Education, was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2023, Guangxi University was included in the Institutions of Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intellectual Introduction Program, specifically in the field of Civil Engineering.

The School has established a comprehensive talent cultivation system that spans undergraduate, masters, doctoral, post-doctoral, and adult education programs. It encompasses a Civil Engineering postdoctoral mobile station, doctoral programs in Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering, and a masters program in Architecture. At the undergraduate level, the School offers three majors: Civil Engineering (including Architectural Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, etc.), Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, and Architecture. Both Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, while Architecture has been chosen as a first-class undergraduate major construction site in Guangxi.

The Schools Civil Engineering major has successfully passed the Institutions of Higher Education Civil Engineering Major Evaluation (Certification) conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development for three consecutive times in 2006, 2011, and 2016. Furthermore, the Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering major has been recognized as a National Characteristic Major and obtained Engineering Education Certification in 2021.

Since its establishment, the School has nurtured over 13,400 graduates at all levels. Among them are outstanding talents such as Li Zhaozhuo, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference, Liu Wenlian, a national master of engineering survey and design, professors from esteemed universities, and a multitude of experts, scholars, project management professionals, and technical personnel in the fields of Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Architectural Planning. They have made significant contributions to their respective fields, showcasing the School's commitment to fostering exceptional talent and promoting excellence in education.
