School of Physical Science and Technology, Guangxi University, with a long history and profound cultural foundation, was the former Department of Mathematics and Science when Guangxi University was just founded in 1928. The Department of Physics was founded in 1933, where renowned physicists, such as Academician Hoff Lu, Academician Shi Ruwei, and Professor Zheng Jianxuan taught here. In 1978, the school was authorized to set up one of the first master degree programs, and master degree program of First-level Disciplines in Physics in 2005. Since the "Double First-class" (world-class university with world-class disciplines) project fully implemented in 2017, the school has entered a rapid development phase: In 2017, the discipline of Physics was selected as one of candidates for Guangxi First-class Discipline Construction; in 2022, the discipline was officially the second round Guangxi First-class Discipline Construction Point; in 2018, the school was authorized to set up the doctoral degree program of First-level Discipline in Physics; in 2019, the school was approved as a Postdoctoral Research Station. Moreover, the major of Physics has been a construction point for National First-Class Majors among universities affiliated to the Ministry, and the major of Electronic Science and Technology has also been a construction point for Guangxi First-class Major. Besides, the undergraduate major of Integrated Circuit Design and Integrated System have been set up in 2022.

Faculty: Tenure-track system will be implemented for all research-oriented full-time teachers from 2018. The discipline of physics now has 57 doctoral supervisors and 83 master supervisors. There are 66 research-oriented full-time teachers, whose amount would reach 120 by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan. Among these teachers, 3 have been selected to National Major Talent Program, 17 have been awarded the title of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Provincial-level Talent, and 5 have hosted key projects of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, Outstanding Youth Science Foundation and National Natural Science Foundation, 1 won the second Prize of the National Natural Science Award as the first author. Among those part-time doctoral supervisors, there is 1 foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 11 young scholars selected for National Major Talent Program or National Talent Fund Project.

The school has formed a talent training and academic research pattern based on physics disciplines, with the intersection of Physics, Astronomy, Electronic Science and Technology, and Integrated Electronic Circuits and Systems. The main academic directions conclude Astrophysics and its detection technology, Photoelectric Physics and Devices, Condensed Matter Physics and New Energy Technology, Integrated Circuit and System and Micro and Nano processing technology.

Academic Platforms: Platforms are provided in Guangxi including a major basis of science and innovation, a multi-provinces-co-built State Key Laboratory for process of non-ferrous metals and special materials, an engineering and technical center of new battery materials, a nanoenergy research center co-built by Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangxi University(GXU), Guangxi University-National Astronomical Observatories Physics and Space Science Center, etc. Laboratories in GXU cover nearly 4 hectares, with research equipment valuing near 200 million RMB, such as field emission scanning electron microscope, electronic probe, PPMS, CLSM, cryogenic magneto field optical microscope system, photo induced force microscopy system, magnetron sputtering, inductively coupled plasma etching, PECVD, ultraviolet exposure system, UHV E-beam evaporation, nano electron beam writing system, MOCVD and other shared large equipments as well as a large superclean lab (with 1200 square meters). The School of Physical Science and Technology cooperated with other institutions both at home and cross board also has co-built auto optical sky survey system, fast response auto tracking telescope, a 1-meter optical telescope of LCOGT-AL, China-France VHF base station of SVOM and other large-scale field astronomical observation equipments and ocean blue energy measurement base. With other famous platforms in China, including Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Astronomical Observatories, Purple Mountain Observatory, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Central China Normal University, Giga Device, etc., the School has created a united new talents fostering basis. In order to build an excellent environment, we have had a coffee shop for study communication and a special room for academic discussion. What’s more, the School regularly holds a front-line academic forum and academic lectures for postgraduates.

Talents Cultivation: There is a complete development system for research talents, namely a bachelor-master-doctor-postdoctoral development system. Our bachelor majors includes Physics, Electronics Science and Technology and Integrated Circuits and Systems, with enrollment of about 250 students per year. And approximately 50 PhD and 200 Master students are enrolled every year. In order to cultivate research-oriented undergraduate talents based on national and local science and technology programs, the School has established an astronomy elite class since 2015, and the rate of students pursuing a master’s degree after graduation has been maintained at over 80%. In 2018, the class for training innovative talents in physical and electronic sciences was founded. The two classes have been established based on the joint training model that concludes three periods of study for degrees of Bachelor, Master and PhD. Undergraduate students can also take part in the election of other special classes cross schools as well as majors.

Academic Research: We focus on national major science plans and develop our technology, carrying out basic researches around front-line scientific topics. In the past 5 years, we have undertaken 176 national projects and investments in various research have accumulated to 240 million RMB, including 17 major and key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and key R&D projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology or military projects, 52 general projects of NSFC, and 13 major and key (including talent) science and technology projects at provincial and ministerial levels. In 2022, our teachers published 600 SCI papers, of which more than 90% are in JCR I and II. There were 5 papers being received and published by Nature and Science, one of which was published with Guangxi University as the first author. The team of astrophysics and related detection technology won an award of  innovation and competition in Guangxi.

Exchanges and Cooperation: The School of Physical Science and Technology has developed in-depth exchanges and cooperation with both domestic and international platforms, including National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, etc. Based on these cooperation, the School has an 1-meter optical telescope of LCOGT-AL and share the use of more than 20 optical telescopes of LCOGT distributed in 8 stations around the world, the China-France SVOM satellite and its VHF base station, the spectrometer with 4-meter optical telescope, China-ASEAN Blue Energy Associated Laboratory, etc., and conducts research on programs including POLAR-2 and HERD, development and utilization of marine blue energy based on nano power generation technology, self-driven marine environmental application system and so on.

Service Support: The School is managed in accordance with the modern university management model to ensure that full-time faculty members are free from tedious affairs and can focus on talent cultivation and academic research work.
