The School of Economics of Guangxi University has a long history and its origin can date back to the Department of Economics of Guangxi University established in 1937, with Mr. Li Da, a famous ideologist and a representative of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, as the first head of the Department. In 1992, the Department of Economics of Guangxi University was renamed as the School of Economics of Guangxi University. In 1997, the School of Economics of Guangxi University merged with the Department of Agricultural Economics Management of Guangxi Agriculture University to form the School of Business of Guangxi University. In 2021, the first-level discipline of Applied Economics and related undergraduate majors of Guangxi University were incorporated into the China-ASEAN Institute of Financial Cooperation to form a new School of Economics of Guangxi University. The School of Economics has nearly 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students, with more than 20,000 alumni are spread across China and Southeast Asia. Many of them are taking a lead in all walks of life.

Applied Economics is the only subject of the School of Economics that belongs to a project of Ministry of Education which aims to elevate subjects to first-class in Guangxi as well as world-class status. The School of Economics has the only doctoral program in Economics and the only postdoctoral research station in Applied Economics in Guangxi. Its three undergraduate majors of Finance, International Economics and Trade, and Economics keep developing, and have been selected for the project of the Ministry of Education to become first-class subjects in China. The School of Economics has two unique majors, Frontier Economics and China-ASEAN Economics, set for postgraduates. The first national experimental teaching demonstration center for liberal arts in Guangxi and key laboratory of universities in Guangxi are also set up here.

The School of Economics has many famous experts who used to teach here, including Shi Fuliang, Yang Shizhan, Zhang Xianchen, Chia Qisheng, Zhou Bo Di, Shi Siutong, Zhang Renji, Xue Muqiao, Li Tiemin, Wang Tanru, Wang Xueying, etc.. They have fostered a number of excellent students in the School, such as, Lan Tianli, current Chairman of Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Liao Lin, President of ICBC Headquarter; Li Jiheng, former Minister of Civil Affairs; Xiao Yingzi, standing member of Hainan Provincial Committee; Mo Gongming, standing member of Chongqing Municipal Committee; Su Dao-yan, former Vice Chairman of the Political Consultative Conference of Guangxi; Zhang Yuanxin, former Director of the Development and Reform Commission of Guangxi; Yin Jianguo, former Director of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.

Today the School gathers a number of famous experts, including: famous economist Zheng Xinli, border research expert Xing Guangcheng, ASEAN research expert Zhai Kun, economic and trade expert Qu Weixi, investment expert Sang Baichuan and other expert advisors; National Talents Program inductees Tian Lihui and Wang Ning; the keynote speaker of the 19th collective study of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Li Guanghui, who enjoys the special allowance of the State Council, and other full-time teachers; the School of Economics also introduced many high-end talents from Oxford University.UK, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and other institutions.

Leading by the two characteristics of "ASEAN and Border economy", the School of Economics is striving to build first-class teaching and research teams in ASEAN, Frontier Economics, free trade zone and blockchain (digital economy). It has initiated an experimental class for innovative training of financial top talents, and has several research platforms such as China-ASEAN Institute of Financial Cooperation, China Frontier Economy Research, China (Guangxi) Pilot Free Trade Zone Research Institute, Guangxi Development Research strategy Institute and China-UK Blockchain Industry Research Institute.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the School of Economics will uphold the values of "diligence, honesty, sincerity and innovation", with the "Double First-class" spirit of "innovation and creativity, striving for the first place, first-class in all aspects". And the School will focus on national strategies and regional development, in order to become "internationally renowned, outstanding in characteristics and first-class in China". It will contribute to providing intellectual support for the country's moral education and the high-quality development of Guangxi's open economy.
