Academician Wang Shuangfei of GXU Awarded the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in Commerce

Recently, the China General Chamber of Commerce announced the 2023 Science and Technology Awards. Academician Wang Shuangfei, a professor of Guangxi University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was granted the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in Commerce. He is one of only two recipients and the first individual from Guangxi to receive this award.

The China General Chamber of Commerce Science and Technology Award, established with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Office for Science and Technology Awards, includes the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in Commerce as one of its categories. It aims to recognize outstanding figures in technological innovation in the field of commerce and related manufacturing industries, leading industry technological progress. The State Preeminent Science and Technology Award in Commerce has been established since 2021, and up to now, a total of seven individuals have received this award.

Professor Wang Shuangfei was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2021. Over the past 30 years, Professor Wang Shuangfei has led the Clean Pulping, Papermaking, and Pollution Control Team at Guangxi University. They have addressed the longstanding challenge of foreign monopolization of core technologies in pulp bleaching, which severely affected the healthy development of China's papermaking industry. Through independent innovation, they developed a large-scale chlorine dioxide preparation and pulp bleaching key technology equipment system, breaking the long-term monopoly of foreign companies. This technology has become the mainstream in clean bleaching internationally, with a market share exceeding 80%, significantly promoting the leapfrog development of pulp bleaching in China. Their achievements won the National Technology Invention Second Prize in 2019. Addressing the global challenge of high concentrations of pollutants in wastewater from the light industry, which are difficult to biodegrade, Academician Wang Shuangfei led a team to develop key technology equipment systems for the efficient treatment and resource utilization of typical wastewater from the light industry. They broke the monopoly of foreign companies and have been applied in more than 200 companies at home and abroad, winning the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize in 2016.

In the past two years, focusing on the urgent need for independent core technology equipment for the green, low-carbon, and high-quality development of papermaking, Academician Wang Shuangfei led a team to undertake the national key research and development project "Biopaper Technology and Industrial Demonstration." This project aims to achieve "near-zero" wastewater discharge and "increased production without increased pollution," providing technical support for promoting industry technological progress, optimizing and upgrading industrial structure, and implementing the strategy of ecological civilization construction.
